Heynckes Happy To Wait For Gomez Injury To Heal
Former Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes has claimed that he would certainly waited for Mario Gomez to return from injury and attain full fitness. The German international was recently left out of the World Cup 2014 squad by manager Joachim Loew on the context that he has not been fit in the last few months. After suffering a crucial ligament injury at the start of the season, Gomez has just returned to first team action with Fiorentina. He has been Germany’s first choice striker for the last few years, but his move to Fiorentina put this in major doubt.
It has proven to be the case after the German national team will be taking part in the World Cup without him. Heynckes got the best out of the striker when he was at Bayern Munich. Gomez played an important role in the club’s Champions League success last season. Heynckes says that Gomez represents the best strike potential that the national team has the moment. In his absence, Loew will be depending upon Miroslav Klose, who at 36 years of age is probably playing in his final World Cup. Gomez has featured in almost 60 appearances for the national team and has scored 25 goals.
He recently spoke about the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup place. “Gomez has been injured for a long time. One can understand the decision, but I certainly would have waited until the last moment to see whether Mario got fit again or not. The coach has called up Sami Khedira and Miroslav Klose, who were both injured for a long time,” said the former Bayern Munich manager. Germany will be having a tough World Cup from the start, as they face the likes of Portugal, Ghana and the USA in the group stages
